Time Is Running Out, The Latest Details On ITIL® V3 Official Retirement

January 15, 2021 | ITIL

Since the new (not so new anymore!) ITIL® 4 framework was launched in 2019, IT Professionals have been transitioning or updating their skills to follow the latest schema. Until now, ITIL® v3 certifications have not been retired and for some people, continuing down this path was favorable to the ultimate goal of transitioning to ITIL® 4. However, Axelos has announced the official retirement schedule for ITIL® v3 certifications courses. Moreover, the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition module which is currently used by professionals to update from the previous to the new framework (bridge) will also be retired.
These two events can impact your ITIL journey in many ways and we believe it’s important to take a moment and read to following to understand how it affects your personal situation. We also want to emphasize on the fact that the skillset and knowledge obtained from ITIL® v3 remains valuable and recognized. There are clearly differences between the two frameworks but ITIL® 4 is an advancement that was built upon the existing body of ITIL knowledge (ITIL® v3), thus it remains relevant.
What’s the plan now? Well, that can only depend on your objectives and current position within the ITIL® v3 schema!

Here’s What You Need To Know And Dates To Remember

On June 30, 2021: Axelos will retire the ITIL® v3 Foundation level course.
This course has already been retired from the IT Chapter course catalog, but we can provide you with the self-paced format, if needed (contact us for more details).
However, if you are just beginning your ITIL journey, we recommend you start right away with the new framework to obtain the ITIL® 4 Foundation certification. This option is available as an online course with instructor or as a self-paced learning format and is offered in both English and French.

On December 31, 2021: Axelos will retire ITIL® v3 intermediate certification courses.
Just like ITIL® v3 Foundation, we will continue to provide the self-paced format of the courses, if needed (contact us for more details).
The courses to be retired from the Service Lifecycle modules are:
  • ITIL Service Strategy (SS)
  • ITIL Service Design (SD)
  • ITIL Service Transition (ST)
  • ITIL Service Operation (SO)
  • ITIL Continual Service Improvement (CSI)
The courses to be retired from the Service Capability modules are:
  • ITIL Service Offerings and Agreements (SOA)
  • ITIL Planning, Protection and Optimization (PPO)
  • ITIL Release, Control and Validation (RCV)
  • ITIL Operation, Support and Analysis
On June 30, 2022: Axelos will retire the ITIL® 4 Managing Professional Transition module.
This course is used as a bridge from one framework to another. However, there are some prerequisites to it. Depending on where you are in your ITIL® v3 journey, you either need a minimum of 17 ITIL® v3 credits or 15 credits from ITIL® v3 with the ITIL® 4 Foundation Certification.

Time To Plan...

In light of all details above, it’s time to start planning for the future of your ITIL journey. If ITIL® v3 specialization is your goal and you don’t have the Foundation level certification, make sure to complete it before June 30th, 2021. You will then have until December 31st, 2021 to pass your specialization course. There are different reasons that could motivate your decision to take the ITIL® v3 path but remember that ITIL® 4 offers similar and upgraded versions of the ITIL® v3 specializations in the ITIL® 4 Managing Professional stream.
On another side, if you are already an ITIL® v3 Expert or aspire to be in the short term, you can complete the Transition Module to ITIL® 4 which will be retired in 2022. As previously mentioned, you will need to ensure you have the prerequisites when it comes to the accumulated credits. The transition course covers the core elements of the following modules:
Ultimately, the value of completing ITIL® 4 Managing Professional Transition before its retirement is that it will allow you to bypass the ITIL 4 Foundation and the four advanced levels, leading you straight to your new Managing Professional designation!
In conclusion, make sure you keep in mind the dates mentioned above in order to reach your certification goals. If you need more details or further information on the courses, be it ITIL® v3 or ITIL® 4, make sure to let us know.
